GEAR UP: Harmony Jade Yoga Mat

There’s nothing better than feeling held by your yoga mat. Despite your best efforts to firmly plant your palms into the mat, I often hear yogis complain about their hands slipping forward in poses such as downward facing dog.

You won’t find that with the Harmony Jade Yoga mat.

The quick and dirty:

Jade Harmony Yoga Mat
  • Grip
  • Ease of cleaning it
  • Appearance
  • Comfort
  • Company ethics
  • Price

This durable rubber material will have you feeling secure and rooted with just the right amount of effort. It’s easy to find a good grip. And to prove it’s the best, it’s the only mat my dear cousin sells at her yoga studio. After eight years of practicing yoga regularly on this winner, I cannot say that this essential has disappointed.

Here are just a few of the perks:

  • It’s versatile. You can use for yoga (inside or out!), exercise classes and Pilates.
  • It comes in a variety of beautiful, earth-toned colors that are easy on your eyes as you flow through your practice.
  • It’s eco-friendly.

And a few constructive criticisms:

Because of the this mat’s sticky nature, I’ve found it more difficult to clean the Harmony mat in comparison to the cheap, slippery ones. I’ve used a water and vinegar spray solution with a towel which does the trick, but doesn’t always leave me satisfied, especially after a sweaty practice. I find that the towel can leave particles of cotton behind. This being said, I’ve taken the garden hose and sprayed it off, line drying afterwards – easy and effective, enough!

I’d say, the pros definitely outweigh the cons.

A little history:

As the story goes, BKS Iyengar, a world renowned yogi was practicing on an oriental rug and found himself slipping. A nearby spectator pulled the rug away so that he could practice on what Jade Industries (creator of the Harmony) once created, a rubber rug pad. This moment birthed the idea of creating the yoga mat. This version was toxic and made of PVC, creating room for lots of slippage. The company evolved and created the first ever natural rubber and nontoxic mat in 2000.

What’s even better?

This family-owned company creates all of their mats in the United States abiding to the strictest environmental laws. And even better than that, for each mat sold, there is a tree planted.

  • 3/16” thick
  • 24” wide
  • Offered in a variety of lengths: 68”, 71”, & 74”
  • Weighs about 5 pounds

Price: From $74.95

Although it may seem steep, the Harmony mat has lasted me over eight years, and it still holds its own. It continues to be sticky and durable, showing few signs of wear.  That’s less than $10 per year – I’d call that a truly wise investment!

My take: I would recommend the Harmony Jade mat to anyone who wants to invest in their yoga practice. This mat will not leave you frustrated that you couldn’t get into a pose because of slippery hands or feet.
